The Indie Music / Non-mainstream music Featured Artist: A Fine Frenzy

Name: A Fine Frenzy
Real Name: Alison Sudol
Genre: Indie-Alternative, Alternative Rock
Years active: 2006-present

Nostalgic. That is how I felt when I first listened to Alison Sudol's music. You know that kind of music that takes you back someplace, sometime? That's how it was for me. This fine music zapped me all the way back to my high school days, chilling out in a dull heated afternoon just listening to music. It didn't matter what type of music it was...as long as it was fine and something you can relate to, it's all good.

A Fine Frenzy as she calls herself (taken from William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Theseus, Act 5, Scene 1: "The poet's eye, in a fine frenzy rolling, doth glance from heaven to earth, from earth to heaven"), is really the best best way to describe herself and the lovely music she produces.  There are bouncy songs, slow songs, tones that go high then drop. There songs about being happy, being sad, love, grief and everything else in between. Either with full band or just plain piano, the songs just take you from nowhere to everywhere.

The lyrics from this wonderful artist are just raw and pure. It has everything that I look for from an alternative artist, heck from a music artist. Some songs tell us a certain experience, some just tells us a story of some random trivial thing, The kind that just pops out of nowhere and blindsides you. It's real and somehow I feel that every single line in the song was experienced by the artist. Its actual and comes from the heart.

Also, I do not know if it is just me, but listening to her is like giving me Tori Amos and Michelle Branch wrapped together. The hauntingly sweet voice with an edge reminds me of both artists.

If you wanna go to different places through music, then hop on to this fine frenzy. I shall be listening to artist for a very very long time.

And yes, I am very fond of pretty redheaded girls with wonderful voices....

Interesting facts:
  • Alison Sudol listened to a wide variety of music growing up, from swing to rock to Aretha Franklin (I guess this explains the wide types of music she produces)
  • The short demo she sent out received attention from EMI's Jason Flom, who signed her after visiting her house and "listening to her play."
  • Sudol's music has been featured multiple times on the television series House. The song "Whisper" was heard during the episode "Joy to the World", and the song "Hope for the Hopeless" has been in three episodes: "Act Your Age", "Human Error", and "Airborne". "Hope for the Hopeless" was also featured in the Defying Gravity episode "Natural Selection". The song "Lifesize" was played during the episode "Doppelgangers" of How I Met Your Mother.

Busy May, Thankful May

Had a very very busy month of May..that's the reason why I was not able to post a single entry for that month..well actually...it started in the last few weeks of April..work stuff just started to pile up on top of each other..add to that..some personal financial responsibilities caught up with me...and I also did a little traveling to the Visayas region...

[the heat...unbearable..here..there..everywhere...]

Given my busy schedule last month, I'm usually exhausted at the end of the day..so I sleep early...since the premise of this blog is me having a sleepless night in order to write..well..that didn't quite work did it?

Anyway, here I am now..being given a short respite from the task load at work [dunno how long that's gonna last]...I get the chance to stay up a little late and catch up with this little web space of mine ...

It's funny how I find myself complaining a little bit whenever my work gets loaded and becomes extremely busy.. and when I'm not doing anything I complain too[boy reklamo ka na din Dave?]...hindi naman ata... its just strange...its not that I don't like my work...[love it actually] I don't like being busy...I don't like being idle either...hahaha..It's a balancing act I guess...

But come to think of it...being busy at work...it's a good thing...someone once told me that If work is busy..then it means business is good...and for a small starting company like ours, those things are very important...there's just an influx of projects right now...add to that..I can feel that my skills are really being appreciated...when I started working in my current job..i barely do development..only when I'm needed to..and that's great..most of the time its because I'm the only one who could do it [HA!!! FEELING!! angas...hehehe]...most of my job focuses on working on Technical Designs and reviewing codes...and of course conducting training...but now..thankfully..I've progressed and I'm now involved in functional stuff..project analysis..estimating and other higher level stuff...last May 25 marked my first year anniversary in my current job..so looking back...I say I've progressed pretty darn well...

Also, the fact that I have financial responsibilities to my family now means that I'm at a financial level wherein I can handle those big things now...[and you still have enough to buy stuff for yourself]...yis!! good job Dave!! hahaha...

[Wow!! lot's of responsibilities now!! You're finally becoming a man!!]

gago...hahah..not that I wasn't before...but yeah..I guess that hasn't sink in until now...

[I know right? Actually have real world..life affecting responsibilities now]

yeah..realized that just now
[tanga mo...ngayon mo lang na-realize yan??]

i guess..I haven't realized its magnitude before
[stupid boy]

Leave me alone!!
[Why are you talking to yourself???]

I dunno..I'm weird..or its a sign its time to sleep...there's just so much to write...lot of things running in my head right now...but I'll organize them first and settle them down...
[And all I hear is ay ya ya ya ya
You're talking way too much
I can't even hear me now
All your noise is messing with my head
You're in my head
Get outta my head

Outta my, outta my head

Want you outta my head
Outta my, outta my head
Get outta my head]

WTF??
GO LAKERS!!!

The Indie Music / Non-mainstream music Featured Artist: Ingrid Michaelson

First entry for this...let's start with one of my favorites:
Name: Ingrid Michaelson
Genre: Indie pop, Indie folk
Years active: 2002 - present

Ingrid Michaelson has the "you close your eyes you know it's her" type of voice. It's really soft and smooth that there is no effort needed to listen to her. Most of her songs are in the folk/pop genre. Her albums are a good mix of slow, easy listening songs as well as the upbeat type. The songs are usually accompanied by acoustic guitar, piano and some simple percussion that really makes you focus more on her really smooth effortless vocals.

So, if you're looking for some well rounded music that takes you from going slow to upbeat in a real smooth transition..then an Ingrid Michaelson album is a good pick. yes, that is the word of the day Ingrid Michaelson = Smooth.

Interesting facts:
  • She's currently under the record label Cabin 24 which re-released her first self released album "Girls and Boys"
  • Her songs have been used in the TV Series Grey's Anatomy
  • She worked on a song with Sara Bareilles entitled "Winter Song

Recommended songs
  • Be OK
  • The Way I Am
  • Maybe
  • Far Away
Albums:
  • Girls and Boys (2007)
  • Be OK (2008)
  • Everybody (2009)

The Indie Music / Non-mainstream music Featured Artist entries

As I've mentioned before...I'm a big fan of indie music and non mainstream music...so I've decided to do my part to help these artists out...every now and then I shall feature on my blog an indie or non mainstream artist (person or group) so I could share their music to the less than handful of people who read this blog..hopefully..you'll like the artist...tell your friends about them and they'll like it too..then they'll tell their own friends..and so on..you get the picture.

I wont talk about the artist's personal info here..I'm quite sure you'll find plenty of those somewhere else..What I'll talk about mostly is the music they make..why I like them and what are some of the songs that they have..now..I'm not a music expert/critic so don't expect me to make excellent reviews...most of what I'll say might be incohorent but that's ok..incoherency is the theme of this blog...

These artists make my day better with their music..this is what I think I can do in return..heheh...

if you're wondering what I mean by indie and non-mainstream...well...
indie = artists who do not belong to any recording label/company..basically these people do everything on their own..the writing, the arrangement, the exposure, the advertising, the getting from one gig to another etc.
non-mainstream = they belong to a recording label (whether big or small) but the music that they make is not really in the sights of mass media..not what the majority is listening  too...

if you know non-mainstream artists/indie artists...do let me know about them...

...brain floating on alcohol...

yes you read it right...

my brain was floating on alcohol last night..and frankly..i think it still is right now...I had a drinking session with two of my best friends at San Mig pub in ATC ..we started at around 7:30 pm and ended well past 12 AM..it was a lot of fun hanging out with old friends..

[you drank too much beer...now you have to burn it off by running]

i've often been asked why i like to drink...why i'm always game for any drinking spree...i have to say its not really the drink that gets me to go on these things..its the company..i think the reason why they call "hard drinks" as such is because these thinks are pretty hard to drink..you can't just gulp it down..you'll end up a pile of heap on the floor...it's difficult to drink so that you'll drink it slower..and since you drink slower..you get to spend more time together with your pals..thats the best part...and also, its fun to hear stories during drinking sessions...stories can be very significant but can also be as pointless as this blog...but these are real stories..real experiences..."in vino veritas"...

these old friends of mine are really fun to drink with...they talk about anything and everything..topics range from what's going on in work/school, politics, how nice the south area is, girls, basketball and even Jesus' Messianic title...yes even that one...

{I cannot for the life of me remember how we even got to that topic]

i've decided that I shall write about these friends of mine in a future entry but first, i have to think carefully what words to put in...because if not..if i piss them off...trust me...you dont want these guys having a good time at your expense...but that does not mean that that blog will all be goody goody...Mike, Lawrence, Lags...prepare yourselves

lemme just end this entry with a nice quote about drinking

I feel sorry for people who don't drink.  When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day.  ~Frank Sinatra

How to stay young

Posted on my old multiply site on November 25, 2007

Para sa mga tumatanda na..wahehehe...
Got it from Apollo's site...Thanks bro....
HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Try everything twice. On Madams tombstone (of Whelan's and Madam) she said she wanted this epitaph: Tried everything twice...loved it both times!

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. (keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches;)

3. Keep learning: Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever Never let the brain get idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name can be Alzheimer's!

4. Enjoy the simple things.  The breeze on your cheek, a second cup of coffee outside, listening to the birds sing, every sunset you can see...

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. And if you have a friend who makes you laugh, spend lots and lots of time with HIM/HER.

6. The tears happen: Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. LIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love: Whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

11. Forgive now those who made you cry. You might not get a second time.

I liiiiiiiiiive!!!

Yes, I am still alive and sleepless as usual.

I am greatly disappointed in myself for not being able to blog for months. Main reason is that I have been very busy in both work and personal matters hehehe which I might share in the next few entries. I'm just glad to be back on the blogging scene again...

[Dave, you're room feels like an oven, you should get one of them cold air blowers that you put ice in]

Anyway, there's lots to talk about, you'll read about them soon...for now..here are some thoughts swirling in my head

  •  I am unable to continue the Cebu Bohol trip series since I don't have the pictures until now!! I want the entries regarding the trip to be full of pics. I shall continue these when I get a hold of those.
  • The Kings of Convenience concert is one of the best concerts I've been to.
  • I really like indie music..I believe it is music in its  purest form...it comes from the heart...the singers and songwriters in the indie field can really write what they want, when they want, that's why it feels and sounds so sincere...since there is no recording label that dictates what music they should create. Support indie music
  • I'm currently witnessing a really bad season of American Idol {*sniff* Didi..too early *sniff*) [Still think Senjaya was the worst finalist?]
  •  There are a lot of things I want to do but haven't found the time and will to actually start them [hmm..maybe writing about them might be the jumpstart I'm looking for]
That's it for now...I'm also in the process of transferring some of my old blogs from my multiply account..so bear with me..or read them on if you want to...
